To deeply sympathise (love) requires personal experience.
1
In a first world country:
What sort of agency are we, the individual, if we come from the Anglo Saxon Euro-Centric tribe with its recent (last 300 odd years) spiritual history, typified by the Aryan bird of prey?
A history of inflicting chaos and plunder, generating refugees of the others from afar – leaves a biological inheritance of exceptionalism and with it extreme callousness.
UNTIL NOW
The experience of being a refugee of sorts is upon us.
The experience I am thinking of is the exclusion or expulsion from the tribe.
1
Cultural war has been bubbling away since the First World War, but at a level such that it could be dismissed by the wilfully ignorant, until now – (the satanic energies afoot in the Western aligned world have exposed themselves sufficiently to be impossible to deny, even for the psychologically collapsed) – and still remain fully human.
Chaos and plunder of human values by beasts in human form, heading towards a totalitarianism of the masses, is not hard to see, given the World’s experience of the two great attempts last century.
1
The archetypal forces at play mirror somewhat those active in the great Western Christian tradition. With churches heavily weighted to upper middle class boomer adherents, the current neo-liberal political economy only tends to look after them and the upper class. The old idea of class warfare is not far from the surface, resulting in cherry picking the “causes” that are promoted and the poor and discarded are not high on the list.
1

Displacement
1
The night time crawling in
I feel a sudden-ness as if I am one as is him …
1
him who has to take refuge to be clear,
quiet even among the din elsewhere
so as to be alone
to think clearly about having to face
all of those homeless displaced.
1
For I am so party to warring lords
who cause the pain
to unsettle those who are on the move
because of what at times I am so fully unaware.

The Confessing Church
1
Dear Lord
I have been re-reading Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s Letters and Papers from Prison. This is not something one finds easy to do as he clearly lays it on the line.
1
Does one live by your call or not?
1
In this moment of history – this moment of the secular pharisees, this moment of the almost wholesale semi-violent usurping of cohesion of our society, the question becomes:
1
On what do I base my response? – is it as Bonhoeffer shared:
1
“The ultimate question for a responsible man to ask is not how to extricate himself heroically from the affair, but how the coming generation is to live. It is only from this question with its responsibility toward history that fruitful solutions can come, even if for the time being they are humiliating.
… it is much easier to see a thing through from the point of view of abstract principle than from that of concrete responsibility.
The rising generation will always instinctively discern what we make the basis of our actions, for it is their future that is at stake.”
1
Dear Lord

Did you go through this during your 40 days in the desert?
1
The idea of your path to martyrdom is rather fearful.
1
But
1
If that is necessary in all of the decisions we have to make along the way ahead, gift us with your strength to follow you faithfully.
1
Lord hear us.

+++What If
1
I recently watched a video of an interview given by an ex Prime Minister of Australia, Malcolm Turnbull, to an American media commentator from CNN Reliable Sources, detailing the columnity that Turnbull claimed Rupert Murdock and his son Lauchlan had visited upon democracy.
I found it quite shocking that a political figure of Turnbull’s standing would risk saying it in the public forum. – I need a coffee to think about this and so off I went to get one and;
I was drinking said coffee in a pleasant lounge and got into conversation with a very good looking woman about the role and quality of the Media in relation to truth in a time of hybrid war.
It took less than a minute or two for me to realise that this lady had started to play me like a tin whistle, in a form of reverse Socratic dialogue and I knew that here was someone I was out of my depth with.
Well, how many diverse sources of news and comment do you have she asked?
Well I said, here in South Australia, basically only one.
1
AHHHH! – Then a different tack.
1
Can I ask you, are you a philosophical materialist?
Oh this is different I thought somewhat startled. No I replied, I am what you might call a philosophical personal idealist.
Which means she said that you probably are a religious person? – I didn’t reply. She went on, can I ask which one of the great wisdom traditions do you follow; being a Caucasian, probably Christianity?
Tentatively; broadly I replied, although I would express it as a pilgrim trying to follow the Jesus way and trying to gain some useful insights along the way.
1
Alright she said: What If
1
What if what I asked? – What if you could only have one of the four stories about Jesus, which one would you choose?
Well at this turbulent time in world history, and the Eurocentric culture that we live in, I find the first story – Mark’s story, the most challenging for how I am trying to be as an adult human being.
1
She then followed with; – Can I ask why Mark’s story as I find most say John?
1
Because I find that Mark’s Jesus emerges to be a radical non-conformist in his time of tyrannical Roman World Empire, and so helpful as a basis for contemplating how to be during this present time of tyrannical American Empire. But the insights from all four stories are needed.
1
Then she changes tack again.
1
Lets come back to the media and the tremendous concentration of corporate ownership of it. What is it in Australia; one overwhelmingly dominant one with another more fragmented and restricted mainly to the eastern states?
Pretty much I said.
Back she comes; is that enough to get a sufficient picture to allow you to be a fully informed, responsible citizen, or does it effectively end up almost ideological propaganda?
1
With that she abruptly stood up and announced that she had to leave. I asked if we could perhaps meet again for a cup of coffee but she declined. It hadn’t taken her too long to work out that she had little to learn from me and so needed to move on. I have to say that it didn’t leaving me feeling too bright and that night I reread Mark’s gospel. A deeply crucifixion story I find.
There are just too many examples of people who have gone against the Empire and its comprador followers, very much reminiscent of Proverbs 8:13 and ended up renditioned to either death, exile or locked up, not to be aware of the courage required.
1
She reminded me that he who stands still is in great danger of losing his freedom and so;
1
ON THE ROAD AGAIN – searching for Truth in this almost post Covid world.

Spoke too soon!!
“Australian police stormed a building belonging to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), as part of an ongoing investigation against stories from 2017 related to Australian forces involved in possible war crimes in Afghanistan.
1
Prime Minister Scott Morrison tried to downplay the matter, though this was actually the second day of such raids against the reporter involved, while insisting that his government is “committed to press freedom.” He sought to avoid responsibility, however, saying that probe was actually started before he became premier. He also pointed out that ABC is a state-run outlet.
1
The 2017 articles in question were specifically related to the use of “unlawful killings” by Australian special forces. The warrant demanded drafts of the stories, access to reporter emails, and handwritten notes. Over 100 pages of documents were taken, and two USB drives…”

The Suffering Servant of Second Isaiah
1
“He sketched a portrait of one he called “the servant of the Lord” who was, I suspect, simply a symbol of the Jewish nation facing its future realistically. The servant was to live out the vocation that this unknown prophet was driven to see as the only possible vocation for those he thought of as God’s chosen people.
1
Israel’s role was to no longer seek power, but to accept powerlessness as a way of life. The “servant was to go beyond Jewish boundaries to bring justice to the Gentiles, light and salvation to the world (49:6). The “servant” was to live out the tenderness of God for all people (55:5), to guide the thirsty to water (55:1), to set life free (42:7), to make people whole (42:7). He would not resist hostility or pull back from maltreatment (50:5-6). His face would be set like a flint toward his purpose (50:7). Though afflicted, the “servant” would live in the expectation of a final vindication that would probably come not in history, but beyond history. This figure would finally be overwhelmed, meet a shameful death, even be slain as a criminal. That was all part of accepting the vocation of powerlessness.” (Jesus for the Non-Religious – John Shelby Spong)

Janine Hartley’s following article resonates with this great Jewish prophet’s insight.

1
Where Freedom Begins – Janine Hartley

‘Take me with you,’ she said. ‘I’ll try harder, I promise.’
1
Hassan found it very difficult to resist Farida’s pleas, but he knew well the consequences if their parents found out, if they were captured by soldiers, or worse. ‘Farida it is dangerous, you know that.’ Hassan tried to be strong, but he had always found it difficult to resist his younger sister when she looked at him that way. Those beautiful big brown eyes so much like their mothers that could speak of gentleness one minute and darkest storm clouds the next.
1
‘You know the soldiers are always prepared on Fridays for the Ni’lin protest’, she fired. ‘Maybe you and your friends should not be so stupid and surprise the Occupiers occasionally’, she said. Her body was tense, and she knew that convincing her brother to let her go with him was not going to be easy. Hassan replied gently, ‘What if mother and father return and find you are not here?’ Hassan shrugged, ‘what then, eh?’
1
‘They will think I am at school, that’s what I do on Friday’s remember?’ Farida rolled her eyes and gave her brother a pitying look. Hassan chose to ignore the taunt and she continued. ‘Besides, they will be held up at the checkpoint for hours. Mother will miss her appointment at the hospital again. They will still need to go there to make another appointment again. They will not be home before dark.’
1
Farida was right, the soldiers were expecting the weekly protest, but the foreign activists and media always knew when and where the protests were. Without that support the world would not know what their people suffered under Israeli Occupation or the impact The Separation Wall has on their village. Yes, she was right, that was another reason not to allow her to accompany him. Farida carried fire within her, fire that could get them all killed. He knew there was no point in demanding she stay behind, he had to find a way to convince her with reason, she had never been one to conform to rules, not those of their culture or their father.
1
‘Farida listen to me.’ Hassan stood to look out of the kitchen window toward the eight-metre-high wall that surrounded their town and cast a shadow over his heart. He knew he had to tread very carefully, not even hint at the fact of her gender forbidding her taking part. She was as sharp as a tack and she wasn’t going to let this be easy for him. He turned to look at her and decided to take a different path that he hoped led to somewhere other than her anger. ‘Farida, our brother was killed just for throwing a stone at an Israeli tank, cousin Olan is just twelve years old and sits in gaol, no-one knows why and for how long. What if the bullet hits you this time, and how could I protect you when I don’t know where you are until I hear you yelling at the soldiers?’
1
‘Hassan my legs will move faster than my mouth this time, I promise. Besides, didn’t our brother die fighting for our freedom, if even you deny me freedom to protest the Occupation then he has died in vain’.

“Swing Voter”
Is the commonly denigrated “swing voter” simply a self centred chaser after MORE, as implied, or could it be that the “swing voter” is in fact a “performance voter”, casting a vote based on the lack of delivery of promised policies and outcomes, elucidated during the theatre of election promises the previous time around?
1
Conversely, is a party stalwart voter, an evaluate r of trajectories of past successes and failures, or more like a slot machine handle pulling automaton?
1
Is it similar to the difference between what some sociologists call communal Wayfarers and practising Wayfarers: The difference between those who practice citizenship seriously and diligently, and those who take it for granted?
1
At this time, perhaps the civility or crudity which contending political aspirants use when performing for and addressing citizens, might give pause for some thought. Is the cultural atmosphere being simply reflected in those offering themselves for public service, OR, is it being led by their example?
1
How much are they “bought” by the rewards of the job, OR, how much by the results for the commonweal that may be possible to generate?
1
Do we even know enough about the aspirant; who are they, what is their background, what values and virtues will they be bringing to the table etc.?
1
Will they truly represent the policies and outcomes that you have voted for, or are you being treated as a means to an end and if so, who’s end?
1
Citizenship requires us to VOTE WISELY!
1
The linked video demonstrates the possible outcomes of the neglect of taking citizenship seriously.
